Our summer cover crop is getting established nicely. sunn hemp and buckwheat.

Amazingly, we seemed to have eliminated our spring hand/hoe cultivation. Last year we battled weeds in our transplanted crops and direct seeded crops alike. This year we have decided to commit to a new approach, one where we prepare beds at least two weeks in advance and allow them to rest under a tarp until we are ready to use them. When we are, we uncover, rake to disturb the leggy weed seeds, flame the bed top (grass is our primary weed hence the two-step flame process), and either seed or transplant. The results have been incredible. We have not had to hand weed our direct seeded greens or hand hoe our transplants. We do all of our bed top tillage with a power harrow, controlling depth so as to not bring up more weed seeds. Compostella Farm is currently located on temporary land. We are looking for land to purchase and permanently set up our farm. Our needs are semi-flexible, but we are looking for something in the range of:

7-15 acres
mix of cleared and wooded land
flood zone C or X
1 hour from New Orleans
existing buildings/homes a plus
